The Touch Bar MacBook Pro, released in October 2016, adopted USB-C for all data ports and power and included a shallower "butterfly"-mechanism keyboard. It eliminated Ethernet and FireWire ports and the optical drive. It is thinner than its predecessor, made solid-state storage (SSD) standard, added HDMI, and included a high-resolution Retina display.
The retina MacBook Pro was released in 2012: the 15-inch in June 2012, a 13-inch model in October. Updates brought Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduced Intel's Thunderbolt. Called the "unibody" model because its case was machined from a single piece of aluminum, it had a thinner flush display, a redesigned trackpad whose entire surface consisted of a single clickable button, and a redesigned keyboard. The unibody model debuted in October 2008 in 13- and 15-inch variants, with a 17-inch variant added in January 2009. Later revisions added Intel Core 2 Duo processors and LED-backlit displays. The 15-inch model was introduced in January 2006 the 17-inch model in April. The aluminum MacBook Pro used the design of the PowerBook G4, but replaced the PowerPC G4 chips with Intel Core processors, added a webcam, and introduced the MagSafe power connector. It was the higher-end model of the MacBook family, sitting above the consumer-focused MacBook Air, and was sold with 13-inch to 17-inch screens. Neither can be used for Bootcamp BTW, much to my disappointment.The Intel-based MacBook Pro is a discontinued line of Macintosh notebook computers sold by Apple Inc. The OS complains about improper ejection if I go through a shutdown, so I am wary about leaving irreplaceable data or complex running programs on either of them. The SD card seems able to shut itself down when not being accessed, hence minimal battery impact, so I leave it plugged in. The USB3 dongle is more versatile but my impression is it uses more battery, so I tend to leave it unplugged, and keep it in my bag. Also I can sell them on / use them on other computers. They're not perfect, but they do what I want for storing large files at the cost of a bit of battery life on my Air and a few mm of space. I have both the 128GB PNY storedge low profile SD card, and a 128GB mini USB3 sandisk low profile flash drive, both of which sell for a few dozen dollars. Probably would be cheaper to sell your Air and buy another 2013 model with the SSD space you want. And if they are, either now or in the future, likely to be very expensive for what you get.
